The Graduate Program in Entomology aims to train high-level professionals in the field of scientific research, higher education, and technology within three major fields of knowledge: (1) Systematics, Taxonomy and Biogeography ; (2) Ecology and Diversity; and (3) Agro-Forestry and Medical-Veterinary Entomology.
The program was founded in 1969 and is one of the oldest and most traditional Graduate Programs in Brazil. It has awarded graduate degrees to several entomologists who currently work as professors and researchers in important national and international institutions. We have 23 faculty members from the Federal University of Paraná and Embrapa who are renowned entomologists and advise outstanding research projects.
One of the Program’s main strengths is in its solid line of research in Taxonomy, Systematics and Biogeography, which is closely linked to the Padre Jesus Santiago Moure Entomological Collection, one of the largest scientific collections in Latin America with approximately seven million specimens. This is also reflected in our curriculum’s emphasis on practical content and the systematics of insects. The Ecology and Diversity line of research has published prominent research on climate change and urbanization in international journals, while the Agricultural and Forest, Medical and Veterinary Entomology line, in partnership with Embrapa, has investigated epidemic control measures and researched alternatives for biological control and insecticide reduction.
To allow students to have different experiences throughout their training, our curriculum is wide-ranging and we promote the exchange of professors and alumni between Brazilian and foreign institutions. We intend to contribute to the training of entomologists with the ability to solve problems, interact in teams, and articulate long-term research programs.
