Registration for the master’s degree course of the Graduate Program in Chemistry must be made through the link of the Academic Management System of the Graduate (SIGA) UFPR, which will be made available after the set of information below.

To enroll in the selection process for the Master in Chemistry at UFPR, the candidate must have completed the undergraduate course in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy or other related to the area of Chemistry.

The list of documents required for registration, the description of the stages and procedures of the selection process, and guidelines on indication for scholarships are presented in the Public Annoucemente (Public Annoucement 06/2023).

1. DOCUMENTS FOR APPLICATION

Applicants must have obtained a Bachelor’s or equivalent academic/professional degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences or other Chemistry-related area.

The following documents must be scanned (or filled online) and uploaded on the SIGA/UFPR home page:

I – Full application form, according to the model available on the SIGA website (see link below);

II – Copy of the certificate or diploma in which the conclusion of the undergraduate course is duly confirmed, or proof of enrollment in the last term of the undergraduate course. This document should be issued by the Academic Registration Unit of the institution of origin.

The degree obtained by the applicant must be accredited by the Education Ministry or related Authority in the applicant’s country of origin.

III – Copy of undergraduate academic records or transcripts of completed programs;

IV – Fully documented Curriculum vitae, prepared according to the general guidelines that are made available through the following link: “PPGQ/UFPR Criteria for analysis of Curriculum vitae”.

V – An updated photograph in square format: 3×3, 4×4, …,NxN.

VI – Copy of the passport identification sheet.

For enrollment after approval in the MSc selection process, foreign citizens will be required to provide copies of the Brazilian CPF (individual tax payer’s identification) and of the Foreign Identity Card (RNE) issued by the Brazilian Federal Police.

Registration must be made exclusively by electronic means and within the period specified in the official Program calendar.

 

2. STEPS OF THE SELECTION PROCESS

To be admitted in the MSc course of the Graduate Program in Chemistry at UFPR, the applicant is required to pass the entire selection process whose goal is to evaluate his/her knowledge level in Chemistry. Applicants will be assessed through the following examinations:

  1. A written test in Chemistry;
  2. Analysis and scoring of the Curriculum vitae;
  3. An interview with the Selection Committee.

Applicants should be aware that passing these three selection steps does not guarantee entry in the MSc course in Chemistry. Another requirement that must be fulfilled before admission is the acceptance of the new student by a suitable research supervisor who assumes the responsibility for guiding the student through the entire course, up to the presentation and defense of the Master’s dissertation.

The first step of the selection process consists of a written examination and the curriculum analysis. The partial score of the applicant in this step will be composed by the weighted average of these two examinations, weighted 6 (six) for the former and 4 (four) for the latter.

Applicants who meet the minimum required level in step 1, as specified in the Chemistry Graduate Program internal Regiment, will be eligible for the interview, which corresponds to the second step of the selection process.

The interview will be organized and conducted by the Selection Committee appointed by the Program’s Board of Graduate Studies, which is also responsible for the preparation and marking of the written test. The list of the applicants selected for the interview will be announced immediately after the Selection Committee concludes the assessment of the written tests.

After the interview, the applicant’s final score in the selection process will be calculatedby the average of the results from step 1 (weighted 90%) and from the interview (weighted 10%).

Applications will be rejected for all candidates who, in the written test, score zero in more than one of the main Chemistry areas. Also, applicants who score zero in the interview will also fail the selection process.

 

2.1. WRITTEN EXAMINATION:

The written test covers fundamental aspects of physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry. The questions will be evenly distributed in these four main areas and their preparation will be based on textbooks listed in these general guidelines (section 5 below).

 

2.2. ANALYSIS OF THE CURRICULUM VITAE (CV):

The activities listed in the applicants’ CV will be scored according to the criteria listed in the following link: “Criteria for Analysis of Curriculum vitae”.

Undocumented activities will not be considered in this step of the evaluation process.

 

2.3. INTERVIEW:

During the interview, the applicantis expected to answer questions about his/her educational background and general knowledge in Chemistry. Questions about the applicants’ CV may also be asked in this stage of the process.

 

2.4. CALCULATION OF THE FINAL SCORES:

The criteria and procedures adopted to calculate the final applicants’ scores for admission to the Graduate Program in Chemistry at the MSc level are described in detail in the Program Regulations (Link to the Program Rules and Regulations) (in Portuguese).

According to these rules, applicants who obtain a final score equal or above 7 (seven) in a scale ranging from 0 (zero) to 10 (ten)– after the written test, the CV analysis and the interview -are considered approved in the selection, but still have to fulfill the requirement of acceptance by a research supervisor among the Program faculty members.

The Program Board of Graduate Studies will announce the list of pre-approved applicants on the basis of the final recommendation made by the Selection Committee. These applicants will be given a deadline of 15 (fifteen) week days, starting from the announcement of the list by the Board of Graduate Studies, to indicate the name of his/her MSc supervisor and subsequently complete the enrollment process. Therefore, the acceptance letter from an MSc supervisor is a mandatory document for the final admission after the Selection Process and also, whenever applicable, for the concession of a scholarship for course development.

The available places and scholarships will therefore be awarded to the qualified applicants in the descending order of their final scores in the selection process, provided that the MSc supervisor is properly defined and the deadline for the end of the enrollment process is met by the new students.

 

2.5. CRITERIA FOR SCHOLARSHIP GRANTING:

The distribution of institutionally available scholarships among the newly enrolled graduate students will obey the ranking of final scores from the overall selection process. The granting of a scholarship to a given graduate student will depend on his/her full enrollment in the Graduate Program within the deadlines that are established in the selection calendar (item 2 of these guidelines).

In case of vacancy of an institutional scholarship within the time interval between two consecutive selection processes, regularly enrolled students that were admitted in the immediately preceding selection process will be attended, in their classification order, by action of the Program coordinator.

A scholarship cannot be granted if the recipient is already receiving funding for the same or other research purpose, or if the recipient undertakes paid employment alongside his/her research degree program.

3. PROGRAM AND BIBLIOGRAPHY (WRITTEN TEST)

3.1 PROGRAM TOPICS:

  • Electronic configuration of atoms and chemical periodicity. Periodic trends and their interpretation.
  • Chemical bonding: covalent, ionic and metallic.
  • Bonding theories in Chemistry:
  • valence bond theory (exemplified for carbon and other atoms);
  • valence shell electron pair repulsion;
  • crystalfield theory;
  • molecularorbitals in diatomic systems.
  • Intermolecular interactions: hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions.
  • Chemical equilibrium in aqueous solutions.
  • Gravimetric and titrimetric methods of analysis. Calculations involving neutralization, precipitation, complexation and redox equilibria.
  • Conformation, stereochemistry and acid-base properties of organic compounds.
  • Reactivity of organic compounds (fundamentals).
  • Properties of ideal gases.
  • Thermodynamics: systems, statesand energies; work and heat; first and second laws of thermodynamics; enthalpy, entropyand free energy.
  • Phase diagrams and phase transitions.
  • Electrochemistry: redox reactions; galvanic and electrolytic cells; Nernst equation.
  • Chemical kinetics: reaction rates and rate laws.
  • Structure, formulae, nomenclatureand isomeric forms of coordination compounds
