The Graduate Master’s Program in Tocogynecology and Women’s Health at the Federal University of Paraná (PGTOCO/UFPR) focuses on “Women’s Health”, comprising fields of great interest within Tocogynecology, such as Gynecology, Obstetrics, and Human Reproduction. The program incorporates biotechnological tools alongside technological and scientific knowledge that can be applied in the area.
The Program’s current lines of research are:
– Infections in Obstetrics and Gynecology
This line focuses on the effects of infectious states on the female organism and their implications on reproductive health. It encompasses the study of epidemiology, pathophysiology, etiopathogenesis, and the main effects of the infectious processes in the female organism whether during the pregnancy-puerperal cycle or not. The scope of this line is broad and includes, in Obstetrics, incidents during pregnancy, their consequences either to the pregnant woman or to the conceptus and, in Gynecologic Oncology, the study of infections and their relationship with the oncogenic process. It seeks to bring practical applications to women’s health in line with governmental guidelines, since infections in Gynecology and Obstetrics are directly related to the main public health problems of the female organism.
– Endocrinology in Obstetrics and Gynecology
This line focuses on the effects of the different endocrinological aspects on the homeostasis of the female organism. It seeks to thoroughly study the endocrine function of the female reproductive system: the production of sex hormones, their metabolism, interactions, and physiological effects in reproduction and other systems. Additionally, it studies aspects related to the reproductive function and the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and etiology of the main pathologies of the female endocrine-reproductive system. Public health issues, such as contraception in the different stages of women’s development, as well as women’s health in the climacteric period, are given special focus, in addition to other relevant topics like osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases, their correlation with hormone therapy and its uses. The objective of this line of research is to study reproductive health in order to address the different aspects of women’s general health, considering the health professionals’ — particularly gynecologists — responsibility to clinically approach, identify, and provide the correct follow-up of the main risk factors for chronic diseases.
