Biodiversity and Environment

Description

Biodiversity is a central theme of concern for humanity, since it has been destroyed at alarming rates with important reflections on global climate change and human well-being. The convention on Biological Diversity ratified by Brazil sets guidelines for the study, use and conservation of biodiversity, including global conservation strategies and also guidelines for access to genetic resources and the distribution of the benefits derived from them. Brazil is a megadiverse country, with three biomes included among the top 10 biodiversity hotspots in the world: the Atlantic Forest, the Cerrado, and the Amazon Rainforest. These biomes have an important role in the mitigation of climate problems, such as greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. On the other hand, the large number of animal species, plants and microorganisms of Brazilian biodiversity is a potential reserve for the discovery of new molecules with pharmacological properties and biotechnology in general. The challenges Brazil faces in the expansion of knowledge and the conservation of its biodiversity are already well known, and UFPR actively faces these challenges. The theme of Biodiversity and the Environment was highlighted in the Institutional Development Plan based on the set of priorities identified by our institution, including the need to advance socially responsible research on the various facets of biodiversity, as well as the need to organize and advance, in an integrated manner, the research in the country about the various aspects of biodiversity through the establishment of international networks. The area of Biodiversity and Environment thus aims to foster international cooperative research, from an integrative, multidisciplinary perspective, covering all levels of the biological hierarchy, from molecules to ecosystems (marine and continental), as well as on the level of adaptive responses to socio-ecological systems, i.e. the interactions between society and biodiversity, and from local to global levels. The expectation is the developmento of more innovative and original ways to produce environmental knowledge, around biological diversity, covering, as a scope, the evolutionary origin of biodiversity; its management and conservation, with an emphasis on environmental monitoring and analysis and the evaluation of environmental risks to the integrity of biota, ecosystems and human populations; and the sustainable use of biodiversity and natural resources, including biotechnology
and environmental and genomic bioprospection.
