Advanced Materials

Description

The research area in materials is one of the oldest and well-established in our university, with the community of researchers of different departments and sectors (and linked to different graduate programs) working in collaboration in the various aspects related to this multi- and transdisciplinary field. The merit of the area of Materials at UFPR in the year 2000 was formally recognized when the first “Institutional Infrastructure Development Plan” was made official, in which all research activities were prioritized and ranked into 5 broad thematic areas, with “Materials” ranked first. The Institutional Research Plan (or “Plano Instucional de Pesquisa – PIP”)” was approved by the university council in 2001 (resolution 2001/04-COUN), and the prioritization of this disciplinary field have remained in all adjustments and reviews that were conducted in the PIP, to the present day. In 2013, a substantial number of researchers with strong expertise in nanoscience and nanotechnology (N&N) grouped together to form the UFPR
“Central Laboratory of Nanotechnology” (LCNANO), a project that from the very beginning adopted an innovative and participatory model that convenes the N&N community around the management, operation and use of shared infrastructure. In 2014 LCNANO became part of the national SISNANO N&N system of federal government. It is thus natural that this important contingent of UFPR researchers, who already work together, join the institutional process of internationalization with high experience in internationalized research teams. This is a theme that lies on the frontier of science, conducted by reputable UFPR researchers with several international partnerships with universities or institutes of research and development. The theme covers fundamental aspects, which will bring a strong scientific impact, natural exchange of expertise between teams from UFPR and foreign universities, with a positive effect on highimpact research outputs. On the other hand, the highly applied character and technological impact can be seen in the creation of multifunctional devices and products with high potential for generating patents and transfer to the production sector, with direct impact on the economy of the country.
