CAPES RATING 6 (2013-2016) – Excellent program
The Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Paraná (PPGGEO/UFPR) launched a master’s program in 1998 and a doctorate program in 2006. As the first doctorate program and the second master’s program in Geography to be implemented in the state of Paraná, this program represents a significant move toward qualified academic training and development of research in Geography in the region.
This program has graduated over 550 masters and doctors to date, contributing to the training of qualified teaching and research staff. PPGGEO/UFPR is one of the most recognized programs of UFPR, providing qualified research output and achieving excellent ratings at a national level.
In the Quadrennial Evaluation for 2013-2016, CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) awarded PPGGEO/UFPR a score of 6, attesting to the excellent training the program provides and its international value.
PPGGEO/UFPR focuses on the areas of Human Geography and Physical Geography, seeking to contribute to research and academic output in the Space, Society and Environment area of concentration, with two lines of research: (i) Landscape and Environmental Analysis, and (ii) Production of Space and Culture.
The objectives of PPGGEO/UFPR are:
PPGGEO’s mission is to qualify professionals in Geography and related fields in order to meet the demand for highly qualified teachers and researchers, thus contributing to the development of science and communication of scientific results to society.
The program seeks to be internationally acknowledged as a center of excellence in scientific research and teacher and researcher training.
Based on these premises, PPGGEO also seeks scientific excellence and, from a social and environmental point of view, perceives the dissemination of knowledge as strategic in building a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable society.
Through this program, we seek to prepare graduates to have a positive impact on society and the environment and to be able to: (i) engage in teaching, research, extension activities, as well as in technical application of geographic science, always in a critical, autonomous, innovative, and ethical manner; and (ii) produce applied or basic geographic knowledge, contributing to the field of Geography.
LINES OF RESEARCH
Landscape and Environmental Analysis
This line produces research on physical and environmental geography, comprising geomorphology, pedology, hydrology, climatology, biogeography, environmental planning and management, geotechnologies, and spatial analysis and modeling.
Production of Space and Culture
This line focuses on human and regional geography, with epistemological basis in the human dimension of culture, economy, and politics. It is regionally and nationally acknowledged for its research on urban, rural, tourism, spatial, religious, and perception issues in Geography.
